The Blue Jackets are 21st in the league in penalty killing by successfully working through 72.7% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Detroit Monday night, the Blue Jackets were stifled offensively and it proved to be their undoing against a Detroit team that has start ed the season strong. Columbus held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal in the opening period of play and skated off trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Blue Jackets were outshot by a 13-4 margin and were outscored 3-0 to see the deficit grow to 4-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw both teams fire 10 shots on goal with neither side lighting the lamp, leaving the margin the same at the final horn. Spencer Martin made 24 saves for the Blue Jackets, who were outshot 28-23, in the loss. With Elvis Merzlikins starting in goal Friday night, it’s likely that Martin gets the call between the pipes for this one again.
