Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-2-2022

Colorado will play the first game of its doubleheader at San Diego on Tuesday afternoon. The Rockies entered the series after losing three out of four games against the Dodgers over the weekend. San Diego won two out of three against Minnesota in its last series—this story was published prior to Monday night’s series opener.

Colorado continues to fall out of a playoff position, as it has really struggled to compete since the All-Star break. The Rockies lost three out of four at Milwaukee in their first series back and are entering this series after dropping three out of four against the Dodgers over the weekend. They are now in the midst of an eight-game road trip that will conclude with three games in Arizona this weekend. Colorado is in fourth place in the National League West, trailing Los Angeles by a whopping 23 games. The Rockies are also 9.5 games back of an NL Wild Card spot, so their playoff hopes are quickly fading.

They have been an outstanding offensive team, ranked second in the majors in batting average (.261). First baseman C.J. Cron leads the way with 106 hits, including 22 home runs. Second baseman Brendan Rodgers and designated hitter Charlie Blackmon each have 100 base knocks. They are facing a San Diego pitching staff that is No. 9 with an ERA of 3.77. Right-handed pitcher Jose Urena is expected to be on the mound for Colorado on Tuesday afternoon. He is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks across three-plus innings against the Dodgers his last time out. Urena has seen his ERA skyrocket to 4.67 with a 1.62 WHIP across five starts between the Rockies and Brewers this season.
