Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-2-2023

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres will play the fourth and final game of their season-opening series in San Diego on Sunday. The Rockies are looking to bounce back from a last-place finish in the NL West Division in 2022. The Padres, meanwhile, are hoping to improve upon a season that saw them earn a wildcard spot and reach the NLCS before falling to Philadelphia in five games. The pitching matchup for Sunday's finale will feature lefty Austin Gomber (5-7, 5.56 in 2022) of the Rockies taking on right-hander Seth Lugo (3-2, 3.60 ERA in 2022) for the Padres. The opening pitch is set for 4:10 PM EST.

The Colorado Rockies came out of the gates well this season after winning each of the first two games of the season-opening series against the heavily favored Padres. The Rockies took game one of the series 7-1 behind a two-home run performance from C.J. Cron. In Friday's game two, the Rockies got a stellar start from lefty Kyle Freeman and a home run from Charlie Blackmon to improve to 2-0 on the young season with a 4-1 win. Saturday night, the Rockies were finally stopped by the Padres. The Rockies fell behind 4-0 and then 5-1 before mounting a late comeback that would fall just short. C.J. Cron had another big night, hitting his third home run of the season and driving in two more runs, giving him seven RBI in the young season.

The Rockies now turn to the lefty Gomber to take the series and avoid an opening split against the Padres. Gomber went just 5-7 last season with an ERA over five and a half. On the road, Gomber had an even worse ERA of 5.98 while allowing 51 hits in 52.2 innings. Gomber was, however, effective against the Padres last season with an ERA of 0.96 while going 1-0 in three appearances. Gomber made just one start against San Diego and went 9.1 innings while allowing seven hits.

Key Injuries: RP Daniel Bard, SP Antonio Senzatela and OF Randal Grichuk are all out.
