Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-31-2023

It’s the continuation of a season-opening series between NL West rivals on the diamond down in southern California. The Colorado Rockies are on the road as they play the second game of a four-game series with the San Diego Padres Friday night. Colorado finished last in the NL West in 2022, posting a 68-94 record, leaving them a distant 43 games behind the Dodgers for the NL West title. San Diego earned a wild-card berth with an 89-73 record that put them second in the NL West, 22 games behind Los Angeles. In the postseason, the Padres beat the Mets in the wild card round, two games to one, before dropping the Dodgers three games to one in the NL Division Series. San Diego’s run ended in the NLCS as they fell to the Phillies in five games. Last season, the Rockies won the season series 10-9. This article was published prior to the conclusion of the opening game of the set Thurs day night.

Colorado had a dismal season in 2022 as they were in the basement of the NL West: they haven’t finished higher than fourth in the division since 2018. The Rockies had a quiet offseason as they entered the offseason with the highest payroll in franchise history, so spending money wasn’t a big factor. Jurickson Profar was inked to a one-year deal late in the spring to add another veteran bat to the mix. The other major additions via free agency came in the pitching department as the Rockies signed reliever Pierce Johnson along with Jose Urena and Brad Hand. Colorado acquired Brent Suter and Connor Seabold via trades to give themselves some arms. The Rockies had to replace the back end of their bullpen after Carlos Estevez and Alex Colome departed in free agency.

Kyle Freeland is on the mound for the Rockies as he makes his 2023 season debut in this contest. He made 31 starts last season for Colorado, posting a 9-11 record with a 4.53 ERA, a 1.408 WHIP, 53 walks and 131 strikeouts over 174.2 innings of action on the year. He was a much better pitcher on the road (4-5, 3.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 28 walks, 72 strikeouts over 87.2 innings in 15 starts) than at Coors Field (5-6, 6.00 ERA, 1.517 WHIP, 25 walks, 59 strikeouts over 87 innings in 16 starts) last season, so he has that going for him here. Freeland is in line for his 21st career appearance and 19th start against the Padres here. He comes in 6-6 with a 4.66 ERA, a 1.485 WHIP, 34 walks and 74 strikeouts over 100.1 innings of work against them. Freeland is 3-4 with a 3.42 ERA, a 1.348 WHIP, 20 walks and 40 strikeouts over 52.2 innings of work in 10 career appearances, nine starts, at Petco Park.
