A pair of Western Conference teams open up their 2023-24 schedule on the ice against each other in the City of Angels. The Colorado Avalanche are on the road as they travel to face the Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night. Colorado finished the 2022-23 season 51-24-7 en route to winning the Central Division crown only to see their season end with a seven-game series loss in the opening round of the postseason to the Seattle Kraken. Los Angeles finished last season 47-25-10 and was third in the Pacific Division. They were dropped in the opening round of the playoffs in six games by the Edmonton Oilers. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Avalanche own a commanding 8-1-1 advantage, including a 4-3 road victory in the most recent meeting on April 8.

Colorado won the Central Division title a season ago only to have things go wrong in the playoffs. The Avalanche won 51 games and racked up 109 points as they looked to defend their title from the 2021-22 campaign. Instead, Colorado was held to two goals or less in four of their seven games against the Kraken, including a 2-1 loss in the decisive Game 7. Colorado added some pieces in the offseason, acquiring Ross Colton from the Lightning via trade, while Jonathan Drouin (Canadiens), Tomas Tatar (Devils), Miles Wood (Devils), Jack Ahcan (Bruins), Chris Wagner (Bruins) and Riley Tufte (Stars) came in via free agency. On Tuesday, the Avalanche picked up Caleb Jones in a trade with Carolina, sending Cal Burke to the Hurricanes. Pavel Francouz was placed on long-term injured reserve, clearing the way for Ivan Prosvetov, who was claimed off waivers from the Coyotes, to likely take over the backup goaltending role.

He made 62 starts between the pipes last season, posting a 40-16-6 record with a 2.53 GAA, a .918 save percentage and five shutouts.
