It’s a battle of the top two teams in the East Division of the Sun Belt on the gridiron in the Old Dominion. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are on the road as they make the trip to face the James Madison Dukes Saturday afternoon. Coastal Carolina was slated to play Virginia last week but had the game canceled: they beat Southern Miss 26-23 at home in their most recent contest November 12 though they didn’t cover the 5.5-point line. James Madison slipped past Georgia State 42-40 at home last Saturday, failing to cover the 10-point spread in that contest. This marks the first time that the two programs have met on the gridiron as FBS opponents.

Coastal Carolina had last week’s game with Virginia canceled after the tragic events that took place in Charlottesville, so they have had two weeks to prepare for this contest. The Chanticleers enter the game 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Sun Belt, putting them atop the East Division standings. Against Southern Miss two weeks ago, Coastal Carolina jumped to a 17-0 lead after the opening quarter only to find the game even at 17 at the half. The Chanticleers saw the game even at 20 after three quarters, trailed 23-20 early in the fourth quarter but scored the go-ahead touchdown with 9:20 to play before holding on to the win. Coastal Carolina was edged 365-361 in total offense, gave up 20 first downs while recording 18 and turned the ball over twice while forcing one takeaway. They won the time of possession by a 30:30 to 29:30 margin in the contest.

The Chanticleers are 39th in the FBS in passing offense as they average 257.6 yards per game on the year. Coastal Carolina is 53rd in rushing offense as they pick up an average of 174.1 yards per contest. The Chanticleers stand 45th among the 131 FBS teams that have played this season in scoring offense as they put up an average of 31.6 points per game. Coastal Carolina is average defensively as they are 74th in scoring defense by limiting opposing teams to 26.9 points a contest. Quarterback Grayson McCall has been terrific this season as the architect of the offense. He has completed 168 of 244 passes for 2,314 yards with 21 touchdown passes against one interception while ranking fourth on the team with 165 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Jarrett Guest (nine of 20, 203 yards, three INT, 40 rushing yards, TD) and Bryce Carpenter (three of five, 59 yards, TD, 95 rushing yards, TD) have seen limited action. CJ Beasley leads the team on the ground with 123 carries for 655 yards and four scores. Reese White (73 carries, 414 yards, four TD) is next in line in the run game. In the passing game, Sam Pinckney leads the team with 53 receptions for 814 yards plus two scores this season. Jared Brown (40 catches, 702 yards, five TD), Tyson Mobley (27 grabs, 331 yards, three TD) and Beasley (17 receptions, 159 yards, TD) are each over the 150-yard mark in receiving yards.
