Cleveland Guardians vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-3-2023

The Cleveland Guardians continue their season-opening west coast swing as they travel to Oakland to take on the Athletics. The Guardians are coming off of an AL Central Division title in 2022 and an opening-round series win. The Oakland A's, meanwhile, continue to rebuild from the team's playoff appearance in 2021 and could be looking at another last-place finish in 2023 after doing so in 2022. The pitching matchup for Monday night is scheduled to be a pair of right-handers as Cleveland's Zach Plesac (3-12, 4.31 in 2022) will take on Oakland's James Kaprielian (5-9. 4.23 in 2022). The opening pitch is scheduled for 9:40 PM EST.

Coming off a divisional title and a playoff series win, the surprising Cleveland Guardians didn't stand pat in the offseason. With just 127 home runs, the Guardians added some pop by signing a pair of slugging free agents. Josh Bell, formerly of the Nationals and Padres, was signed to give the Guardians more power at first base and catcher Mike Zunino was brought in to give the team added power at the catching position. For the most part, the Guardians did not lose anyone of note, and hope that the added power to the team's speed and timely hitting will take them even further in 2023. The Guardians are off to a good start after taking three of four from the Mariners over the weekend. Zunino helped the cause on Sunday with his first home run of the season in an eventual 6-5 win in 10 innings.

Cleveland will now turn to Plesac to keep the good start going. Plesac will be making his first start of the season after finishing just 3-12 last year. Plesac is just 2-5 in the month of April in his career with an ERA of 4.89. Plesac has allowed 52 hits in 47.2 innings over nine career starts in April. Plesac faced the Athletics just once last season. He had a no-decision while throwing six innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Plesac struck out two without allowing a walk.

Key Injuries: Two Guardians starters are currently out as pitchers Triston Mackenzie and Ethan Hankins are both sidelined.
