The Cleveland Guardians come into the ALDS as the hottest team left in the field. After sweeping the Rays in two-straight close games, the Guardians are now 26-4 in their last thirty games. The Guardians have made a living this season on outstanding starting pitching, timely hitting, defense and perhaps the league's best closer in Emmanuel Clase. Against the Rays, the Guardians scored just three runs in two games but allowed just one to complete the sweep. Included in the series sweep was a 15-inning 1-0 win in game two in which the Guardians bullpen went nine innings, allowed four hits and struck out six batters. For the series, the Guardians bullpen went 10.1 innings overall with four hits, zero runs allowed and seven strikeouts. The Guardians also come into this series with the third ranked defense in baseball.

Cleveland lived up to its reputation in the wildcard round with outstanding defense and precision play in tight games. With the two one-run wins, Cleveland is now 30-17 on the season in one-run games this season. Cleveland comes into this series relatively healthy but did lose dependable right-handed reliever Nick Sandlin for the playoffs with a shoulder strain. On the mound in the opener will be right-hander Cal Quantrill. Quantrill won a career-high 15 games this season in his first season as full-time starter. He faced the Yankees just once this season but that was back in April. He went 6.1 innings and allowed six hits and allowed three runs including a home run in a no-decision during a 5-4 Guardians' loss. In his last five games, however, Quantrill has gone 3-0 with an ERA of 2.76.
