The Cleveland Guardians travel to Kansas City on Monday afternoon at the start of a three-game series with the Royals. The Cleveland Guardians will likely be playing hard for the last two weeks of the season in honor of their manager, Terry Francona, who is likely stepping down as manager following this season. Francona has all but officially announced his retirement after this season with the possibility of staying in the organization in some capacity. Over the weekend, the Guardians swept the Texas Rangers in three games, damaging Texas' chances of making the playoffs. On Sunday, trailing 1-0, the Guardians exploded for 9 runs in the fourth inning and rolled to a 9-2 win.
The Guardians will turn to veteran righty Quantrill in the opener on Monday afternoon. Quantrill recently returned from the IL and is 3-6 in 16 starts this season including eight quality starts. Quantrill has allowed 93 hits in 85 innings pitched with an ERA of 5.40. Quantrill is 2-2 on the road this season in nine starts with an ERA of 4.93.
