The new-look Vancouver Canucks continue their East Coast road trip with a visit to Madison Square Garden and a rematch of the 1994 Stanley Cup Final. Read on for our best Canucks vs. Rangers pick based on top odds.

Having traded captain Bo Horvat just before the All-Star break, the Canucks face the Rangers in the fifth game for new head coach Rick Tocchet. The Canucks are 2-1-1 since Tocchet took over for Bruce Boudreau behind the bench.

The Rangers have a 9-2-2 record in 2023, though that surge up the standings has come with a little luck in the form of two overtime wins and a shootout victory.

Here is our best Canucks vs. Rangers NHL pick (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Canucks vs. Rangers pick

It's has been a rough season for the Canucks, but they appear to be capitalizing on the good old new coach bump.

In the admittedly small sample under Tocchet, the Canucks have controlled 57.4% of five-on-five score-and-venue-adjusted expected goals, which ranks fifth league-wide.

While it's premature to suggest that the Canucks are set for a dramatic turnaround, if they can get their recent gains to stick, they can at least be more competitive. Despite a 10-13-3 road record, the Canucks have covered a 1.5-goal spread in 15 of their past 20 away games.

Even though the Rangers have been climbing in the standings, they have been a relatively mediocre possession team, relying a lot on the finishing ability of Filip Chytil and Mika Zibanejad. The two centers have combined for 18 goals in 13 games since the beginning of January.

If we're seeing actual structural improvement to the Canucks' game under Tocchet, they should be able to give the Rangers a test, so the puck line play makes sense.

That said, this is only a three-star selection due to uncertainty over Vancouver's goaltending. Collin Delia has been the better option, but if Spencer Martin gets the start, the Canucks are not quite as appealing. Martin has a .856 save percentage in his past 16 appearances.
