The Reds lost each of the first three games of the series, including a doubleheader on Tuesday that pulled the Pirates to within two games of the Reds for fourth place in the division. The Reds offense has suffered as of late which is not a huge surprise given the number of losses their everyday lineup has suffered through. The team traded away Tommy Pham, Brandon Drury and Tyler Naquin at the deadline and then lost first baseman Joey Votto to season-ending surgery. The team has been piecing together lineups since then, including a number of younger players getting their chance to showcase their talents. As a result, they have stretches of ineptitude like the Reds just suffered through against Pittsburgh. On the mound on Thursday against the Cardinals will be journeyman right-hander Chase Anderson. This will be his fifth appearance of the season and fourth start. Anderson is 0-2 in three starts with a 7.88 ERA. He has thrown just eight innings in those three starts and allowed five hits. He's struggled with his control, walking eight batters in those thee starts while striking out 11 batters.
