Cincinnati Reds (74-71) vs. Detroit Tigers (66-77)

The 2023 MLB season goes on Wednesday, September 13, with the Cincinnati Reds taking on the Detroit Tigers in the interleague showdown at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, and the first pitch is set for 6:40 PM ET. 

Cincinnati and Detroit continue a three-game series, and Tuesday’s opener has been excluded from the analysis. The Tigers are -140 moneyline favorites for Wednesday’s clash, while the totals are listed at 8.5 runs. 

The Cincinnati Reds moved to 74-71 on the season following Sunday’s 7-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds stopped a three-game slide and avoided a sweep in a three-game home set against the Cards. Cincinnati was just two games behind the final wild-card spot in the National League on Tuesday morning. 

The Reds are slashing a sturdy .276/.365/.483 with 21 extra-base hits and 15 home runs in September (333 at-bats). On the pitching side of things, the Reds have compiled a pedestrian 5.10 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and .244 batting average against so far this month. 

Connor Phillips is projected to take the mound Wednesday. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander made his major-league debut on September 5, throwing 4.2 inn ings in a no-decision against the Seattle Mariners at home. He gave up five earned runs on six hits and two walks while punching out seven. Phillips has recorded a 4.69 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in triple-A so far this season (40.1 innings pitched).
