ChatGPT NFL Mock Draft – AI Predictions for Thursday's 1st Round Picks

After training it to understand the concept of a mock draft, we asked ChatGPT to make a 2024 NFL mock draft ahead of Thursday night's first round.

As AI becomes more and more accessible and utilized in everyday life, we figured that there's no better way to take advantage of it than to ask it the tough questions, like who will be selected in the first-round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Rather than think too hard about the dystopian future ahead where AI replaces us all, we chose to ask ChatGPT which beefy offensive lineman most tickles the fancy of Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and if Sean Payton will be able to help himself from over-drafting a passer to later scream at on the sidelines.

The NFL draft is unique in that it promises a better future, and usually delivers heartbreak for at least half the franchises hoping to climb the Super Bowl odds. It's one of the biggest spectacles in sports and in just a few days it will have the football world buzzing about which players are best positioned to lead the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds and the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds race.

While we're not worried about ChatGPT becoming the top NFL draftnik anytime soon, it did provide an interesting look at what could happen on Thursday night in Detroit while keeping in mind the NFL draft odds from our best sports betting sites.

How to teach ChatGPT to make an NFL mock draft

Shockingly, it wasn't as easy as it sounds to have ChatGPT link a bunch of names with NFL teams. It took hours to teach ChatGPT how to put together a mock draft. It had to learn the concept of a mock draft, the importance of the draft order, understand that it can only select eligible players, grasp why certain teams need to value the quarterback over everything else and consider trades for specific teams.

Off the bat, after explaining what a mock draft was, I asked ChatGPT to create a mock draft for the 2024 NFL Draft without providing it any information. I just wanted to see where it was at to get an idea of how much training would need to be done before it would be capable of making a mock draft that made sense.

Well, on its very first mock draft it was working off the 2022 NFL Draft order for some reason and selected Malik Willis with the No. 1 pick. Curiously, it had a mix of players from different draft classes ranging from 2022 to 2026 (it included Oregon Ducks wide receiver Evan Stewart). 

Once I realized we would be starting from scratch, I started to provide it with information regarding the 2024 NFL Draft. I gave it the draft order and asked it to use only this order going forward, I then gave it a list of about 50 prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft who had been ranked highly throughout the process/were rumored to be potential first-round picks.

From there I had it run a few mock drafts to make sure it understood what it was doing, but it still didn't at first. On several occasions ChatGPT had the same player selected multiple times or would stray from the draft order. So, I continued to remind it that once a player is selected he's no longer available and that the draft order cannot change without a trade.

After a few mock drafts where things went relatively smoothly, I began introducing team needs for each pick (using the team needs from NFL.com). It then took a handful of tries to help it understand that the quarterback position is far more valuable than others. That's when I introduced the concept of trades with the note that QB-needy teams will often look to move up in the draft to land their potential franchise passer. That's when things began to really take off.

Feeling confident about the knowledge base I had built around team needs, trades, and positional value, I decided it was time to give ChatGPT an official list of players to work off of for the mock. To do that, I amalgamated the top 50 prospect rankings of the two most respected draftniks in the game, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network and Dane Brugler of the Athletic.

Those two are considered the best at what they do, and have sources inside NFL war rooms who alert them to how certain prospects are viewed by front offices across the league. Finally, I asked ChatGPT if we could do one final mock draft using this list of players.

We went pick by pick with me providing ChatGPT the team needs for each franchise on the clock and whether or not certain teams would be looking to trade up for a QB (based on rumors). Here are the results.

ChatGPT NFL mock draft

This pick comes as no surprise with Caleb Williams having been connected to the Chicago Bears for months. The former Heisman winner is considered to be one of the best QB prospects in recent history and opened as the favorite to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Williams is poised to break franchise passing records in Chicago as a rookie.

This is where things get interesting with LSU QB Jayden Daniels long connected to the Washington Commanders at No. 2. But in recent days Drake Maye had seen his odds shorten to be the second player selected with several rumors that new Washington general manager Adam Peters would prefer the big-armed Maye. However, the buzz seems to have flipped back to Daniels going No. 2.

After shipping former first-round QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New England Patriots are expected to take a QB with this pick. It seems that New England will take whichever of Daniels and Maye that Washington passes on. New head coach Jerod Mayo has said that New England is open to trading this pick, though ChatGPT said it would be unwise to pass on the Heisman winner. 

Odds to go No. 3: +400 via FanDuel

Despite letting ChatGPT know that the Arizona Cardinals could be a trade partner for a team looking to move up for a quarterback, it opted to get Kyler Murray a go-to pass catcher in Marvin Harrison Jr. Considered the top non-QB in the class, Harrison gives Arizona a much needed WR1, and ChatGPT felt he was ranked too highly for the Cardinals to pass.

Odds to go No. 4: -220 via bet365

This was the spot that ChatGPT felt st rongly about a QB trade happening with the Chargers having multiple needs at talent-rich positions in this class (OT, WR). Obviously, with the Minnesota Vikings having multiple first-round picks, it made it easier for them to jump to No. 5 for former Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota has long been linked to McCarthy and now the Chargers have picks Nos. 11 and 23 with which to address their needs.

Odds to go No. 5: +450 via FanDuel

If the New York Giants miss out on the top four passers in the 2024 NFL Draft, it's a safe bet that Joe Schoen will nab one of the extremely talented pass catchers. While Malik Nabers is often ranked above Rome Odunze, ChatGPT went with Odunze here, who Daniel Jeremiah has as his WR2. The former Washington Huskies pass catcher is the natural X-receiver Brian Daboll's offense has lacked.

Odds to go No. 6: +300 via FanDuel

Maybe the most obvious pick outside of the Bears taking Williams at No. 1, if Joe Alt is available at No. 7 for the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have one of the league's worst offensive lines and new head coach Brian Callahan hired his dad Bill (NFL nepotism at its finest) as offensive line coach, and few are better at developing hog mollies than him.

While there are murmurs that a defensive player may not come off the board in the first 10 picks of the draft, Dallas Turner is a heavy favorite to land with the Atlanta Falcons. Given the need for pass rush help, a need since John Abraham left in 2012, ChatGPT chose the best athlete among the top three edge rushers in the class.

Up until this point the mock draft had been pretty chalky, but something fun about Cha tGPT running the show was seeing it not continually link the same players with the same teams. When most would have Nabers go to the Bears here, ChatGPT has his teammate Brian Thomas Jr. landing in the Windy City. When asked why Thomas Jr. over Nabers, ChatGPT said Chicago may place more value on his size and vertical speed.

Odds to go No. 9: +10000 via FanDuel

Perhaps the only thing that could get Aaron Rodgers to leave a darkness retreat early or stop talking on podcasts would be if the New York Jets somehow had Nabers fall into their laps. Nabers explosiveness is jaw-dropping and is part of the reason there are rumors some teams have him as their WR1 over Harrison. Imagine Nabers with Garrett Wilson, it would be absurd.

With QBs and WRs dominating the top 10 picks, this would be an ideal situation for Harbaugh and the Chargers. Not only do they acquire a second first-round pick from the Vikings, but they have their choice of top-ranked run mauling right tackles. While there are questions about Taliese Fuaga in pass pro, he's a violent road grader in the run game and fits Harbaugh's M.O.

An obvious need for the Denver Broncos, ChatGPT took Jared Verse over Laiatu Latu as the second pass rusher off the board. Verse fits the profile of the pass rushers the New Orleans Saints would often select in the first round with his power, motor, and ability to be an impacted player against the run. ChatGPT also acknowledges Denver could consider a QB here.

Another team that ChatGPT looked at a QB for was the Las Vegas Raiders before ultimately going with a more coveted player at a position of need. Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell is expected to be the first MAC player selected in the first-round since 2017 after dominating the pre-draft process. With his length, ball skills, and athleticism, he can be the Raiders CB1 from day one.

Odds to be first CB drafted: -125 via DraftKings

This pick made me think that perhaps New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has been using ChatGPT to make his draft selections all along. This is the most Saints pick possible because nobody loves traits and potential in the trenches more than Loomis. Unlike some of his previous picks where that didn't work out (see: Penning, Trevor), Mims has proven to be capable of stardom when healthy.

He could also moonlight as a Zion Williamson replacem ent for the New Orleans Pelicans, too, who Loomis was in charge of for nearly a decade for some reason.

Odds to be third OL drafted: +1600 via bet365

Even ChatGPT seems to understand that it's hard to find a landing spot in the top 10 for a tight end, even if he's clearly one of the best prospects in the class. Like many draftniks, ChatGPT has Brock Bowers landing with the Indianapolis Colts and giving Anthony Richardson a chess piece that can play all over and quickly become one of the best at his position in the league.

What's funny about JC Latham is that every draftnik seems to love him, but due to the sheer amount of talented offensive tackles in this class, he's rarely mocked within the first 12 picks. However, ChatGPT has him falling further than most and the Seattle Seahawks would likely love to see him at No. 16. Latham could plug in at guard immediately while also providing depth at offensive tackle.

Odds to be drafted Over 14.5: +135 via DraftKings

One of the most surprising sliders of this exercise is Terrion Arnold, who is viewed as the top cornerback in the class over Mitchell by many top draftniks. A slide for Arnold would be the ideal outcome for a Jacksonville Jaguars team that desperately needs a cornerback. If Arnold is here for general manager Trent Baalke at No. 17, it's safe to assume there will be even more flatulence at his next press conference.

Not a player that's often connected to the Cincinnati Bengals, but Troy Fautanu could make a lot of sense here. Fautanu played left tackle at Washington but is viewed as a five-position offensive lineman. That versatilit y is a huge bonus for a team like the Bengals that's struggled to keep Joe Burrow healthy. Fautanu could compete at left guard or right tackle right away.

Odds to be drafted Over 15.5: -125 via BetMGM

This is among the most unrealistic picks of ChatGPT's mock draft with Byron Murphy II far more likely to be the first defensive player drafted than the fifth. But if he somehow did fall down the board, general manager Les Snead would run this pick to the podium himself. The Los Angeles Rams need (to try) to replace Aaron Donald and Murphy is the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in the class. 

Odds to be drafted Over 14.5: +120 via DraftKings

A popular team-player fit has been Duke's Graham Barton with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have long had problems on their offensive line. While Barton played left tackle at Duke this past season, he' s projected to move to center in the NFL and would likely start immediately in the Steel City. His ability to reach the second level and his balance in pass pro would bolster the Steelers' offense.

Odds to be drafted Under 20.5: -125 via BetMGM

Apparently ChatGPT loves this center class with Barton and Jackson Powers-Johnson going back-to-back here. Like Barton, Powers-Johnson fills a huge hole on the Miami Dolphins offensive line and can step in and start at center or either guard spot in Week 1. Sticking Powers-Johnson in Mike McDaniel's run scheme seems just unfair. 

Odds to be drafted Under 31.5: -150 via DraftKings

Coming off the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, general manager Howie Roseman made the mistake of paying James Bradberry in free agency. ChatGPT thinks he can rectify the situation by nabbing a versatile and dynamic defensive back in Cooper DeJean. DeJean's physicality makes him a force at nickel, but he has the long speed and ball skills to play outside, too. He's also an electric punt returner.

Odds to be drafted Under 22.5: -110 via BetMGM

Up until this pick, ChatGPT has been pretty consistent with selecting players often mocked in the first round. While nobody has been linking Ladd McConkey to the Chargers, if L.A., opts to trade with Minnesota, he could be the best WR option available at No. 23. He would give Justin Herbert a pristine route runner with the speed to separate vertically. Harbaugh probably also loves the fact that he's a high-effort blocker.

Odds to be drafted in the first round: -120 via bet365

One of the most shocking falls of this mock draft, Olumuyiwa Fashanu is expected to be a top 15 pick on Thursday night. The Penn State tackle h as the cleanest pass sets in the class and was viewed as the top tackle in the draft this past summer. If Fashanu is there for the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones will be screaming, “Yippee ki-yay.” This pick would allow Tyler Smith to remain at guard, too, which is a big bonus.

Odds to be drafted Over 13.5: -162 via FanDuel

The mock draft is unhinged at this point (blame the McConkey pick), but this is actually a pretty interesting fit. The Green Bay Packers have been disappointed in Josh Myers at center and moving Zach Tom, a Pro Bowl-caliber right tackle, inside seems like a poor choice. Zach Frazier gives Matt LaFleur a tough SOB at the pivot, and one who is a leverage monster in the trenches.

Odds to be drafted in the first-round: +300 via bet365

Like I said, it's unhinged. However, there's been some noise as of late that Marsh awn Kneeland could be a potential first-round pick. If both he and Mitchell are selected in the first 32 picks, it will be the first time two MAC players have gone in Round 1 since 2014. Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht has a history of drafting long-armed, explosive D-linemen early and Kneeland is exactly that.

Knowing the importance of the fifth-year option with rookie QBs, ChatGPT opted to have the Broncos jump back into the first round in a trade with the Cardinals. This way, Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort has more draft capital to improve his defense, and Payton gets a young QB to develop.

This is one of the few QB rooms in the NFL that Bo Nix can walk into as the most talented passer. Regardless of how you feel about Nix, it can't be that hard to outplay Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, and Ben DiNucci.&nbsp ;

Odds to be drafted in the first round: +150 via bet365

With all the wide receiver talent in this class, ChatGPT didn't feel the pressure to have the Buffalo Bills move up and general manager Brandon Beane still gets a potential Pro Bowl talent in Adonai Mitchell. While Mitchell is polarizing, he offers a rare mix of route running potential and ball skills that would be an ideal fit with QB Josh Allen.

Odds to be drafted Over 27.5: -174 via FanDuel

Apparently ChatGPT is more worried about Latu's medical concerns than the general public with the dynamo pass rusher tumbling down the board. Given Latu had to temporarily retire at Washington for medical reasons before being cleared at UCLA, it's possible he slides. But if the rest of the NFL allows the Lions to snag Latu this late, shame on them. The Bruins' sack artist is the most skilled hand fighter in the class with a deep bag of pass-rush moves.

Odds to be drafted Over 17.5: +175 via bet365

The Baltimore Ravens are that team that almost no matter who they pick the rest of the NFL is kicking themselves for letting it happen. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Baltimore trade back, but if the Ravens stick and pick it's likely to address the trenches and ChatGPT agrees. Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton is a former tight end with ridiculous athleticism and the type of ascending talent who can start at right tackle as a rookie.

Another team that could be a trade back candidate for a QB-needy team wanting to utilize the fifth-year option, ChatGPT has the San Francisco 49ers prioritizing singular talent over picks. When I asked why they should select Chop Robinson over making a t rade, ChatGPT said, “the value of the available players at their pick outweighed the value of additional picks.” The robot has a point, Robinson's explosive first step would be terrifying opposite Nick Bosa.

Odds to be drafted Over 26.5: +160 via DraftKings

ChatGPT is nothing if not a showman, saving its most entertaining pick for last. With the Kansas City Chiefs biggest need being wide receiver, ChatGPT traded back with the Giants to accumulate more picks with so many talented receivers available on Day 2.

For the Giants, clearly Daniel Jones isn't the answer and with Odunze already set to be in the Big Apple, Schoen and Daboll get his college QB, too. Regardless of if the end result is good, bad, or ugly, this is one heck of a fun pick.
