The Charlotte 49ers visit FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday to play the Florida Atlantic Owls in the opening game of the college football regular season for both teams. Charlotte was 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Conference-USA last season. Charlotte has eight starters back on offense including quarterback Chris Reynolds who last season passed for 2,680 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Charlotte also returns its leading rushers from last season Calvin Camp and Shadrick Byrd who combined for nearly 1,300 yards with seven touchdowns in 2021.
The 49ers will have their top three receivers returning from last season as well as a new recruit who is able to stretch the field. Grant DuBose caught 62 passes for 982 yards and six touchdowns last season and will be joined by Victor Tucker who caught 51 passes for 639 yards and two touchdowns, as the top two receivers for the 49ers.
Florida Atlantic finished last season 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Conference USA. Florida Atlantic returned several of its starters from last season and will be playing an easier conference schedule in 2022. N'Kosi Perry, who transferred last season from Miami, returns as the starting quarterback for the Owls. Last season Perry threw for 4 2,771 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions.'
LaJohntay Wester is the leading receiver returning from last season and will be joined by Je'Quan Borton who averaged more than 18 yards per reception last year. Florida Atlantic's defense received a big boost at linebacker when Jamie Pettway transferred from Missouri and Morven Joseph made his way over from Tennessee. They will join Eddie Williams to give the Owls a very strong group of linebackers that will be the anchor of the defense.
