Carolina Panthers vs. New York Giants Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-18-2023

The Carolina Panthers and New York Giants will take the field on Friday at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Carolina lost 27-0 in its preseason opener vs. the New York Jets. Rookie quarterback Bryce Young was held to 21 yards on 4 of 6 passing in his three series against the NY reserves, who registered five sacks. The Jets outgained the Panthers 189-32 in the first half and piled on 14 points in the fourth quarter.

New York fell 21-16 to Detroit in its opening game. The Giants led 13-3 at the half but gave up a 95-yard touchdown on a third-quarter punt, giving up 18 points in the second half.

The Giants are three-point spread favorites and the game total is 39 points.

Carolina didn't execute on offense in its preseason opener, which will be a point of emphasis on Friday. It won't have much time to prepare for the Giants' scheme, which could be problematic for the rookie Young and the Panthers' young offensive lineman.

“It's going to be a really good challenge for our offense against their defense, just because [Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale] is very exotic with his pressure package,” Carolina head coach Frank Reich said. “There's going to be a blitz zero, there's going to be all kinds of pressure.”

The Panthers will be without running back Miles Sanders (groin) and wide receiver Terrace Marshall (back). Backup QB Andy Dalton is also unlikely to take the field with a back injury sustained in practice Monday.

That said, the Carolina defense won't be tested too much on Friday. The Giants will not play QB Daniel Jones, RB Saquon Barkley, or even backup QB Tyrod Taylor for extended stretches this week. Expect more snaps with undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito under center (15-for-24 for 155 yards, one TD, and one INT in week one).
