The bottom teams in the MAAC are set to butt heads in Poughkeepsie when the Canisius Golden Griffins (5-16, 10-10-0 ATS, 3-9 MAAC) hit the road to face the Marist Red Foxes (7-14, 9-11-1 ATS, 3-9 MAAC). These teams met on January 13th, with Marist coming out on top with a resounding 76-58 victory. The Red Foxes used a 23-7 run to close that game. Neither team has had much success since that game. The Red Foxes are hosting this time around in McCann Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. EST.
Canisius has lost their last four, and the three most recent losses were games that they had a shot at but couldn't close out. On Friday night it was a 76-73 loss against Niagara in which they allowed a 12-0 run late in the second half to squander a six-point lead. They outplayed the Purple Eagles but just couldn't finish the job. Jordan Henderson led the scoring with 15 points, while Jacco Fritz paced the team with nine rebounds and six assists. They narrowly covered the spread as 4.0-point underdogs.
The Golden Griffins are last in the MAAC with a 3-9 record, losing the tiebreaker with Marist and Mt. St. Mary's because they lost to both schools. Still, KenPom has Canisius ranked 281st which is above both of those teams along with another MAAC rival in Saint Peter's. Canisius is 2-10 on the road this season.
On offense, Canisius is putting up 69.8 points per game, fourth in the conference this season. That's despite playing at a tempo that's middle of the pack and shooting 40.6% from the floor, which ranks 338th in the nation. Their three-point shooting is solid though, as they hit 34.7% of their attempts from deep which is sixth among MAAC schools.
Defensively there isn't a worse team in the conference. The Golden Griffins surrender 74.1 points per game while allowing opponents to knock down 37.7% of threes and 47.0% of shots from the floor. Those numbers are all last in the conference and place them in the 300s nationally.
