For a Team USA lineup that hasn't gotten things going offensively to the level that most would have expected through two games of the WBC, Monday is a chance to get things rolling against Canada's relatively inexperienced starter. Mitch Bratt is a 19-year-old farmhand for the Texas Rangers. The former fifth-round draft pick put together a 2.45 ERA in Low-A last season. Though he's had some early success in professional ball, Monday's assignment will represent the most challenging of his young pitching career.
After fumbling the bag so significantly on Sunday, Team USA already has its back against the wall in Pool C. A win on Monday is critically important, but at this point, even a 3-1 record in pool play wouldn't guarantee the U.S. a spot in the next round of the tournament. Allowing 11 runs to Mexico hurts the United States in the event that the runs allowed/outs recorded tiebreaker could come into play if there's a three-way tie at 3-1 in Pool C.
That means Lynn holding the Canadian lineup down could be vital to the United States getting out of pool play.
