Vegas earned a 5-3 road win over Philadelphia in their previous game Tuesday night to finish a road trip on a positive note. Calgary lost for the second time in three games as they were taken down in overtime by Arizona Tuesday night in their previous game. The Flames entered Wednesday fifth in the Pacific Division with a 30-24-14 record, 16 points behind Vegas for the top spot in the division race. They were eight points back of the Oilers for the final guaranteed spot and were five points behind the Jets for the second wild-card spot. Calgary is 21st in the league in goals for as they put up an average of 3.03 goals per contest. The Flames are tied for 14th in the league in goals against by allowing 3.02 goals a night this season. Calgary is 23rd in the league in power play success as they convert 19.3% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Flames are 11th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 81.7% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Arizona, Calgary had their chances but couldn’t bury enough of them, falling in overtime to the Coyotes, though they managed to earn at least one point. The Flames held a 17-12 edge in shots on goal in the opening period but went to the dressing room tied at one after 20 minutes of play. Mikael Backlund opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season at 8:14 off an assist from Rasmus Andersson. They gave up the equalizer just 1:08 later and went to the dressing room tied after 20 minutes. In the second period, the Flames owned a 14-8 advantage in shots with both teams scoring once, leaving the game even at two after two periods. After giving up a goal in the opening minute of the period to trail 2-1, Walker Duehr knotted the game with his fourth goal of the season at 2:03 off assists from Milan Lucic and Noah Hanifin. The third period saw Calgary with a 14-3 shot advantage but both teams scored once, sending the game to overtime even at three. Af ter giving up the go-ahead goal, Jonathan Huberdeau potted the equalizer with his 14th goal of the year at 14:59 with assists going to Troy Stecher and Dillon Dube. During overtime, Calgary was outshot 2-0 and gave up the winning goal to end up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves for the Flames, who held a 45-25 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. He’s expected to get the start in goal for this one as well.
