The Calgary Flames face the Ottawa Senators with both teams off to slow starts to the season. The Flames have stumbled out of the gate with their offense letting them down, scoring only 2.67 goals per game. Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane have scored six goals and nine assists to lead the top line but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only two skaters have three goals or more while only five skaters have four assists or more and opposing defenses can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has let the Flames down, allowing 3.50 goals per game. Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar have combined for 1.1 defensive point shares and 39 blocked shots but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net with ease. In addition, goaltender Jacob Markstrom has struggled with a .896 save percentage and a 2.91 goals-against average on 250 shots with -1.9 goals saved above average.
