It’s a battle of Western Conference teams on the ice as a pair of squads looking to earn two points do battle in the Mile-High City. The Calgary Flames are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Colorado Avalanche Monday night. Calgary was dropped 4-2 at home in their previous contest Saturday afternoon by New Jersey. Colorado was beaten 5-2 at home by Philadelphia in their previous game Saturday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Avalanche own a 7-1-2 advantage and have won the last three contests. That includes a 3-1 home win in the first matchup this season on November 25.

Calgary lost for the third time in four games as they were doubled up on home ice by the Devils in their previous contest. The Flames entered Sunday fourth in the Pacific Division with an 11-13-3 record, 16 points behind Vegas for the top spot in the division race. They were 11 points behind the Kings for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. Calgary is 23rd in the league in goals for as they put up an average of 2.89 goals per contest. The Flames are 22nd in the league in goals against by allowing 3.37 goals a night this season. Calgary is 28th in the league in power play success as they convert 11.9% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Flames are 9th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 84.3% of their shorthanded situations.

Against New Jersey, Calgary started strong but faded as the gam e wore on, sending them to defeat in the process. The Flames owned a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period and took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Yegor Sharangovich opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season, shorthanded, at 19:41 off assists from Blake Coleman and Ilya Solovyov. In the second period, Calgary was outshot 11-5 and outscored 2-0 to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Flames outshot by a 12-7 margin and outscored 2-1 to wind up with the loss. After giving up a goal to trail 3-1, Nazem Kadri got Calgary within a goal with his sixth of the season at 14:46 off assists from Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin. That was as close as the Flames would get as they gave up an empty net goal in the final minute to seal their fate. Dustin Wolf made 26 saves for Calgary, who was outshot 30-25, in the loss. Dan Vladar is expected to be between the pipes for the Flames in this contest.
