It’s a battle of Western Conference teams on the ice as they play the second game of a back-to-back situation up in the Mile-High City. The Calgary Flames are on the road as they travel to face the Colorado Avalanche Saturday night. Calgary was in action against Dallas on the road Friday night. The Flames were beaten 4-2 on the road by Nashville in their previous contest Wednesday night. Colorado was in action on the road against Minnesota Friday night. The Avalanche downed the Canucks 5-2 Wednesday night at home in their previous action. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Avalanche own a 7-1-2 advantage. That includes a 4-1 home win in the most recent matchup on February 25, 2023.

Calgary was in action on Friday night hoping to get some positive momentum going after dropping two of their previous three games. The Flames entered Friday sixth in the Pacific Division with a 7-9-3 record, 13 points behind Vegas for the top spot in the division race. Calgary is tied for 26th in the league in goals for as they put up an average of 2.84 goals per contest. The Flames are 22nd in the league in goals against by allowing 3.37 goals a night this season. Calgary is 26th in the league in power play success as they convert 13.1% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Flames are tied for 6th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 85.7% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Nashville, Calgary played well in spurts but couldn’t hang with the Predators for a full 60 minutes, sending them to d efeat. The Flames were outshot 16-13 in the opening period of play and trailed 2-1 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of action. After giving up a shorthanded goal to trail 1-0, Noah Hanifin tied the game with his fourth goal of the season at 4:46 off assists from Andrew Mangiapane and Chris Tanev. They gave up the go-ahead goal later in the period. In the second period, Calgary was outshot 14-4 with neither team lighting the lamp, keeping the score 2-1 after two periods of play. The third period saw the Flames outshot 15-9 and outscored 2-1 to take the loss. Calgary gave up two goals to trail 4-1 before Yegor Sharangovich got one back for Calgary with an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 19:15, his fourth of the season. Jacob Markstrom made 41 saves for the Flames, who were outshot 45-26, in the loss. With Markstrom starting Friday night, it likely will be Dan Vladar between the pipes here.
