Cal Poly Mustangs (3-3) vs. Pepperdine Waves (4-2)

The 2022-23 college hoops non-conference schedule continues Wednesday, November 30, and the Cal Poly Mustangs head to Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, California, to square off against the Pepperdine Waves.  

These two schools meet for the first time since 2017 when the Mustangs defeated the Waves 91-81 as 6-point favorites. This time around, Pepperdine is a firm 9.5-point home fave with a total of 138.5 points, so let’s take a closer look.

The Cal Poly Mustangs (3-3; 3-2 ATS) put an end to their three-game losing streak last Wednesday, beating the Idaho Vandals 82-71 as 8-point home favorites. Five days later, the Mustangs stunned the Pacific Tigers 62-58 as 7-point road underdogs. Cal Poly erased a nine-point deficit from halftime at Stockton, California, outlasting the Tigers 39-26 through the final 20 minutes. 

The Mustangs outrebounded Pacific 34-27 and gave up just four offensive rebounds. They shot 41.2% from the field and went 14-for-16 from the charity stripe. Junior guard Brantly Stevenson led the charge for Cal Poly with 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field, while senior PG Nick Fleming added 12 points and a couple of assists. 

Senior forward Alimamy Koroma dropped 23 points on Idaho but had just seven points against Pacific. He’s now averaging 12.8 points and 5.3 rebounds on the young season. The Mustangs are scoring 94.5 points per 100 possessions (319th in the nation) on 44.2% shooting from the field (202nd) and 31.3% from beyond the 3-point line (270th) while surrendering 102.3 points in a return (189th) on 41.3% shooting from the field (141st) and 32.9% from beyond the arc (192nd).
