The Buffalo Sabres face the Edmonton Oilers with both teams looking to take big leaps in the NHL this season. The Sabres have been one of the worst teams in the NHL in recent seasons but they have split their first two games this year and have a young and talented roster. The Oilers meanwhile appeared in the Western Conference Final last year and are 1-1 to start the season but are eyeing the Stanley Cup. Both teams are hoping to build off of respectable starts to the season and the upcoming game should be a great one as a result.

The Sabres enter the season with a young core that looks to catapult the team into the playoffs fueled by an offense that is scoring 3.50 goals per game. Victor Olofsson and Alex Tuch have combined for three goals and an assist to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has also stepped up. John-Jason Peterka, Zemgus Girgensons, and Dylan Cozens have combined for two goals and two assists to add depth to the forward unit while defenseman Rasmus Dahlin has added two goals and an assist from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has carried the Sabres to start the season but the defense has also stepped up, allowing only five goals in the first two games. Rasmus Dahlin and 20-year-old Owen Power have led the top two pairings but the rest of the defense has also played well with Henri Jokiharju, Mattias Samuelsson, and the rest of the unit stepping up in the defensive zone and limiting passing lanes as well as scoring chances. Additionally, starting goaltender Craig Anderson looks to build off a strong opening night start where he saved 35 of the 36 shots he faced.
