The Boston Red Sox had a rough offseason heading into 2023. The team lost the face of the franchise, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, in free agency and then it was discovered that slugging second baseman Trevor Story would need shoulder surgery. The team did resign All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers and brought in Japanese import Masataka Yoshida. On Sunday, after a sluggish start, Yoshida blasted two home runs in the eighth inning and the Red Sox rolled to a 12-5 win over NL Central Division-leading Brewers to take two of three in the weekend series to improve to 12-11 on the season. On Monday in Baltimore, the Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks in part to a two-run blast from Devers but starter Chris Sale could not make it hold up after allowing five runs on nine hits in just five innings of work.

The Red Sox will turn to veteran right-hander Corey Kluber on Tuesday night. It has been a tough start for Kluber in his first season in Boston. Kluber is 0-4 thus far with an ERA of 8.50. He has allowed 19 hits and 18 innings and coughed up 17 runs.  In the season opener, Kluber lost to Baltimore after allowing six hits and five runs in an eventual 10-9 Red Sox lost. Kluber's hard-hit% is at a career high 46.4%, which is way above his career average of 32.9%. Kluber's K rate is also just 20.9%, down from his career average of 26.6%.
