The Boston Celtics got off to a good start in 2022-23 with a 127-116 home-win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA season opener on Tuesday night. The win was an important start for the Celtics after a tumultuous offseason that led to the year-long suspension of head coach Ime Udoka. New coach Joe Mazzulla got his interim season off to a strong start with the win. Boston's two stars took center stage as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 35 points and newcomer Malcolm Brogden chipped in with 16 points off the bench in the win.

“It was a proud moment,” Mazzulla said. “I think at the end of the game, the 'Let's go Celtics! ‘chant — we picked up right where we left off. … When they’re cheering for you, you're doing something right.”

Boston's defense was not quite up to midseason form in the opener as they allowed the Sixers to shoot 50% from the field and over 38% from 3pt range. Last season, the Celtics finished with the NBA's #1 ranked scoring defense and used that defense to get to the NBA Finals. On the offensive end, however, the Celtics shined in the opener. Along with scoring 127 points, Boston shot 56% from the field overall and 34% from 3pt range. The Celtics' bench excelled in the game, outscoring the Sixers bench 34-11 in the win. Last season, Boston went 2-1 in the regular season vs. the Heat before upending Miami in seven games in the Eastern Conference finals.

Injury Update: Robert Williams III will be out for at least the first two months of the season as he recovers from knee surgery.
