The top 70 golfers in FedEx Cup points advanced to this week's second of three PGA Tour playoff events, the BMW Championship in Delaware, and the top 30 after that move on to the season-ending Tour Championship. Aussie Cameron Smith, ranked No. 2 in the world and third in FedEx Cup points, has withdrawn from the BMW but is in no danger of missing the Tour Championship. He had been a +900 co-favorite at Caesars Sportsbook with Rory McIlroy.
Bud Martin, Smith's agent with Wasserman, announced Smith's withdrawal Monday morning: “He has been dealin g with some on and off hip discomfort for several months and thought it would be best to rest this week in his pursuit of the FedExCup,” the statement read.
Smith, the winner of this year's Players Championship and British Open, is leaving the PGA Tour after the playoffs for the LIV Series. He comes off a T13 on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and was penalized two strokes for improper ball placement on the fourth hole during his third round. Had he won the tournament, Smith would have supplanted Scottie Scheffler for the top spot in the rankings.
Because of the small field, there is no cut this week – Wyndham Clark is sitting at No. 70 in points and JJ Spaun is at No. 30. Clark was one of four players who entered last week outside of the top 70 and moved inside the threshold to advance along with Lucas Glover, Andrew Putnam and Adam Scott. Glover wouldn't even have qualified for the first playoff event if not for a handful of suspended LIV play ers. Brendon Todd, Anirban Lahiri (the unlucky No. 71), John Huh and Lanto Griffin fell outside the top 70.
