Betsson Survey Results Reveal Nuances of Sports Bettor Behavior

After months of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing survey data, the B2B sportsbook provider Betsson, in partnership with GambleID and'Sports Handle, has issued its final report on the state of'sports betting,'mobile sportsbooks, and'daily fantasy sports'in America.

The 56-page report, which can be accessed in full by clicking this link, offers compelling insights from operators and bettors alike. As evidenced by the fact that 43% of sports bettors reported downloading five or more betting apps and 59% bet daily, that group of respondents revealed itself to be, on average, at least a step removed from purely recreational punters.

To that end, odds and user experience edged out promotions/bonuses as the top drivers of platform choice, while the potential to win money and a passion for sports trumped entertainment as the main reasons why respondents were motivated to bet.

Furthermore, while DraftKings and FanDuel were far and away the most recognizable sports betting apps among those surveyed, there was a disproportionately high level of awareness of bet365 relative to the amount of states the overseas behemoth has launched in.

Report Highlights

Among many additional insights, some that jumped out were:

  • Improved speed/latency was the runaway feature that mobile bettors would like to see improved, with advanced-data analytics and live streaming a distant second and third, respectively.
  • The most popular bet types were point spread, moneyline, and over/under.
  • Most respondents reported that their monthly deposit was under $100. The median annual deposit was reported at $1,000.
  • Overwhelmingly, respondents preferred to bet on football and basketball over any other sport. Golf ranked third as the preferred sport to bet on.
  • Most bettors used The Action Network (a sister site of Sports Handle's) as their primary betting tip tool.
  • In terms of major sporting events, the highest deposits were during the Super Bowl and the lowest during the Stanley Cup Finals.
  • Approximately 40% of respondents withdraw some or all of their winnings, while 36% keep their winnings in their account for future betting.
  • 53% of respondents felt the industry promotes responsible gambling.
