It’s a battle of teams from the NFC South as week 10 of the NFL season gets underway with a primetime contest in the Tar Heel State. The Atlanta Falcons are on the road as they make the trip to face the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football. Atlanta was edged 20-17 at home by the Chargers in their previous contest and failed to cover as a 2.5-point underdog Sunday afternoon. Carolina was drubbed 42-21 by Cincinnati on the road Sunday afternoon in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated, failing to cover the seven-point line. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Falcons own a 35-20 advantage and have taken the last two meetings, including a 37-34 overtime win at home in the first meeting this season October 30.

Atlanta battled with Los Angeles at home, taking an early lead only to lose on the game’s final play. The Falcons enter this game 4-5 and tied for the top spot in the NFC South with Tampa Bay though the Buccaneers won the first head-to-head meeting to own the tiebreaker. Against Los Angeles, Atlanta led 10-0 after one quarter, trailed 14-10 at the half and led 17-14 after three quarters before getting outscored 6-0 in the fourth to take the loss. The Falcons were outgained 336-315 in total offense though they won time of possession by a 31:49 to 28:11 margin. Each team recorded 19 first downs and turned the ball over twice, including a play that set up the winning points where each team turned the ball over.

On the year, the Falcons enter week 10 30th in passing offense with 157.2 yards per game while they are 4th in rushing offense by picking up 162.9 yards per contest. Atlanta is 9th in the league in scoring offense with an average of 24.1 points per game and stand 26th in the league by allowing 25 points per contest. Marcus Mariota is 124 of 201 for 1,561 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has been sacked 21 times for 146 yards in losses while adding 304 yards plus three scores on the ground. Cordarrelle Patterson is second on the team on the ground with 71 carries for 384 yards and five scores on the year. Tyler Allgaier (94 carries, 423 yards, TD) and Caleb Huntley (64 carries, 299 yards, TD) are also in the mix. Rookie Drake London leads the team with 33 receptions for 369 yards and two touchdowns this season. Kyle Pitts (23 receptions, 285 yards, two TD) and Olamide Zaccheaus (22 grabs, 331 yards, two TD) are the only other players with more than 150 receiving yards on the year. Younghoe Koo has converted all 22 extra point attempts and 15 of 19 field goal tries with a long of 54 this season.

The Falcons have a short list of walking wounded to work with as of Monday’s injury report. Center Matt Hennessey (knee), tight end Feleipe Franks (calf), safety Erik Harris (foot) and cornerback A.J. Terrell (hamstring) all didn’t practice Monday. Keep an eye out for updates on their respective statuses leading up to kickoff. Hennessey has been ruled out for this contest as of Tuesday morning.
