Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets, Game 1, Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-12-2023

The Atlanta Braves (72-41, 57-56 RL, 62-49-2 O/U) battle the New York Mets (52-62, 45-69 RL, 46-61-7 O/U) in game one of Saturday’s NL East doubleheader. The Braves will give the starting call to Spencer Strider or Allan Winans. The Mets will respond with Jose Quintana. The Braves lead the season series 5-1.

Spencer Strider will get the nod in one of the games in the doubleheader. Strider was roughed up in his previous start, conceding six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings against the Pirates, and was hit with the loss. The young strikeout artist has not been quite as dominant recently and will give up home runs. He has issued a 3.94 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP complemented by a 12-4 record in 132.1 innings pitched. Strider has allowed 12 runs in nine innings against the Mets this season and has a poor  7.23 ERA and a 3-1 record in 23.2 innings. 

Atlanta is near the end of a challenging road trip. They stand at 3-4 on the trek entering Friday night. They lost two of three to the Cubs followed by two wins in four meetings in Pittsburgh. The Braves are going to win the division but are still looking to have the best re cord in the majors. They are 5-5 in their last ten bouts.

Sean Murphy has dominated the Mets pitching this season, accumulating 10 RBIs and a dazzling 1.3 OPS. The veteran catcher is having the best season of his career, delivering 18 homers with 61 RBIs and an .899 OPS. Murphy has issued a .753 OPS on the month.

The Braves are posting an average of 5.70 runs per game, marking them second. The pitching has been shaky recently and has a 3.95 team ERA, placing them ninth.
