There's quite a disparity on paper between the Atlanta Braves (84-45; before Monday's game) and the Colorado Rockies (49-81). Atlanta took all four meetings between the clubs in June. However, each side has been competitive against playoff teams lately, and Coors Field can quickly humble any visitors. Denver's MLB park will be the venue again for Tuesday's round two. Beginning the week with a sizable 12.5-game NL East lead, the Atlanta Braves will probably cruise to another division title. The Orioles, Dodgers, and Rays are lurking, but Atlanta seems destined for MLB's best record this season too. It begins with an offense that is leading the league in scoring. They were one of four teams scoring more than six runs per game in August as of Monday morning. The Braves rule the MLB leaderboard in all three slash line categories, OPS, and home runs. Atlanta also owns a top-10 strikeout rate, stolen base total, and stolen base success rate. Led by Matt Olson (NL HR leader) and Ronald Acuna Jr. (NL MVP favorite), Atlanta's lineup stresses most pitching staffs.
Don't overlook Atlanta's arms, who have allowed the fourth-fewest runs per game this year. The Braves have a bullpen ranked top-thr ee in WAR, FIP, and ERA. In the rotation, their pitchers are also dominant. Veteran Charlie Morton is lined up for Tuesday's start, trying to collect a fourth straight winning decision. He can also rebound from a five-run (three earned) performance across 5.0 innings against Colorado in June. Considering that he's thrown 18.0 straight scoreless innings, redemption may be on the menu.
