Astros vs. Dodgers Picks, Predictions & Odds – Brown Primed to go Strikeout Huntingiv class=”bodyContent col-lg-9 mb-3″>

The Dodgers will look to win their fifth straight game on Sunday. Let's dive into the matchup with our Astros-Dodgers picks based on the best MLB odds from our best sports betting apps.

In a turn of events that should surprise precisely zero baseball-watching humans, the Los Angeles Dodgers have returned to being their usual steamrolling selves lately. They've won four straight games after a stretch of mediocre play, including taking the first two of their current series against the Houston Astros.

What's especially impressive about the Dodgers' recent run is that much of their success has come through pitching. The team has recorded two shutouts across four consecutive victories and allowed just two runs in another matchup.

But the first two games against Houston have been hard-fought affairs, with only one run separati ng the clubs during each contest. And now on Sunday Night Baseball the Astros will counter the Dodgers' strong pitching with Hunter Brown, who has recorded four shutout appearances in 2023.

Here is our best Astros-Dodgers pick (odds via our best MLB betting sites; Pick confidence is based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

The Dodgers' lineup remains the sort of group that makes pitchers generally want to be somewhere else. The team ranks fifth in OPS (.778), tied for fourth in runs (404), and second in homers (122).

But there's a number we care abou t far more for this wager: 678.

That's the total strikeouts from Dodgers hitters, which puts the team on the doorstep of the bottom 10 leaguewide. Right now two of the Dodgers' key batters sit among MLB's top 30 in strikeouts, with James Outman tied for ninth (90 strikeouts), and J.D. Martinez sitting in 26th (78).

And now they'll face a pitcher with a lethal fastball-slider combination that's led to eight outings with seven-plus strikeouts.

Brown is coming off a few recent stumbles after giving up five earned runs to the Minnesota Twins on May 31, and six to the New York Mets during his last start on June 19. But we care so very little about the number on the scoreboard for this bet. Instead, we're honing in solely on his strikeout total, and he still cleared 5.5 easily even in those blowups, recording eight against Minnesota and seven while facing New York.

He's sailed past this line in five of his last seven starts, largely while relying on blistering fastball velocity that ranks in the 84th percentile of MLB, according to Baseball Savant. Opposing teams have recorded a batting average of just .245 against his four-seam heater in 2023. Brown is also due for some positive regression, as his BAbip sits at .312 overall and rose to an astronomical .388 in May, and his batting average against rests at a lowly .209 during June.

If that's not enough, the tasty dessert here is the quality value relative to Brown's projections on Sunday. Ballpark Pal is giving the righty -167 odds to go Over 5.5 strikeouts, making FanDuel's price of -112 highly appealing.

Astros vs. Dodgers odds analysis

The Dodgers opened as the -120 favorites, and they've generally settled around -130 at most of our best sports betting sites after some minor fluctuation. Caesars offers the best line on the favorites at -125, while FanDuel is the leading shop for the underdog Astros at +114.

Meanwhile, the total opened at 8 before climbing to 8.5 at some books. Currently, three of our best live betting sites are offering 8.5, so Under bettors should head to Caesars, BetMGM, or PointsBet. Of those three, PointsBet offers slightly better odds at -110. For Over bettors, FanDuel is posting the best price while giving -118 odds for the Astros and Dodgers to go Over 8 runs.
