The last time the Wildcats faced Northern Arizona at home, in 2021, the Wildcats were upset 21-19 in the midst of a horrific 20-game losing streak. On Saturday night, after a sluggish first half, the Wildcats rolled to a 38-3 win to gain back a measure of revenge. This week, the Wildcats hit the road and will look for revenge again at Mississippi State. Last year, in Arizona, the Wildcats fell 37-19 to the Bulldogs.

“They not just played extremely hard, they played for 60 minutes,” Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch said. “Every time they went out there, they went out there with energy, passion and a ferociousness.” “We showed our defense has improved,” said UA coach Jedd Fisch after the 38-3 win over NAU on Saturday.

Quarterback Jayden de Laura had a strong showing in the opener. De Laura threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the game. His night was slightly marred by a fourth quarter interception in the end zone that prevented another Wildcat score. De Laura got into the act on the ground too, running for a 53-yard touchdown. In all, the Wildcats gained 478 yards of total offense including 23 first downs.

Arizona's defense held Northern Arizona to 264 yards of total offense including just 78 on the ground. The defense has one sack on the day, seven tackles for loss, and recovered one fumble. Jacob Manu led the way with nine tackles and a half sack.

The Wildcats finished 2022 at 5-7 overall including the blowout loss to the Bulldogs. Still, the program has shown improvement since the dark days of 2020-2021. Last season the team ranked 15th in total offense including 74th on the ground and an impressive 4th through the air. In the opener, the Wildcats cruised to victory despite under 300 yards passing.

Defensively, the Wildcats ranked just 125th in the country in total defense last season. They were 115th against the run and just 112th against the pass. There were good signs in the opener with seven tackles for loss and one forced turnover but the team will step way up in class this week against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State.
