Are the Bears really thinking about taking a QB with the 1st overall pick?

NFL Draft Order puts the Bears at No. 1, Texans at No. 2

It’s Mock Draft Season, even though we still have plenty of football left as the NFL Playoffs begin on Saturday. The Bears hold the No. 1 pick after running out Nathan Peterman and Tim Boyle against the Vikings, while the Texans completed a miraculous comeback against the Colts to throw the No. 1 pick away.

Bears GM Ryan Poles had a media scrum on Tuesday and Justin Fields was a main topic of conversation. Poles noted that Fields needs to become a better passer, but left the door open for taking a quarterback at the top of the draft board. Poles said he needed to be “absolutely blown away” to take one, which means it be on the table.

Are Bryce Young or CJ Stroud impressive enough for the Bears to throw away the time and money they’ve invested in the development of Fields, who was the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. We’ll have several months of waiting to find out, but odds are out there for the No. 1 overall pick.

2023 NFL Draft 1st Overall Pick odds (DraftKings)

  • Bryce Young -125
  • CJ Stroud +175
  • Will Anderson +600
  • Jalen Carter +800
  • Will Levis +1500
  • Anthony Richardson +6000
  • All others +7500 or higher

Poles and the Bears could have a really fun offseason, but it will also be one that dictates the direction of the franchise for many years to come. Chicago owns the first pick and also over $100 million worth of cap space. That is an embarrassment of offseason riches and it would appear that the Bears can add additional draft pick assets for 2023 or future years by trading down if they believe in Fields.
