Alabama Baseball Scandal Bettor Faces Up To 10 Years In Prison

Bert Neff, the Ohio man who used inside information to wager against Alabama baseball in 2023, has been charged with obstructing a federal grand jury investigation, according to reports. He intends to plead guilty and faces up to 10 years in prison.'

The case against Neff, which was filed in the Northern District of Alabama, alleges that he received inside information about Alabama's projected starting pitcher missing a game against No. 1 LSU. He then allegedly shared that information with other bettors and tried to place a significant wager on the game at an Ohio sportsbook.'

After Neff's sports betting activity was flagged for being suspicious — any customer trying to wager a substantial sum of money on a regular season college baseball game is an immediate red flag — an investigation led to the firing of Alabama baseball head coach Brad Bohannon.'

As the investigation continued, Neff attempted to hide his wrongdoing. The Athletic reported Wednesday that Neff tried to destroy cell phone evidence and urged the bettors he shared inside information with to do the same.'
