The 2022-23 college basketball season tips off on Monday with a full slate of games, including the Texas Longhorns hosting the UTEP Miners. The Longhorns, of the Big 12, were 22-12 a year ago while the Miners, of Conference USA, were 20-14 a year ago. These two programs have not played one another in recent years. Game time is 9:00 p.m. ET at the brand new Moody Center in Austin. This will be the first game at Texas' new home court.

The University of Texas El Paso Miners begin their second season under coach Joe Golding, who came over from Abilene Christian. He took over for Rodney Terry, who left to join the team the Miners are playing Monday, the Longhorns, as an assistant coach. It was a successful first season for Golding as the Miners finished 20-14 overall and 11-7 in Conference USA. They lost to Middle Tennessee State in the conference tournament and lost in the second round of the Basketball Classic post season tourney to Southern Utah. UTEP comes into this season ranked No. 158th in the country in the SI power rankings and is expected to finish 7th in Conference USA.

This is definitely going to be a rebuilding year for the Miners as leading scorer Souley Boum transferred to Xavier, while starter Tydue Verhoeven transferred to Northwestern and second leading scorer Jamal Bienenemy graduated. Also, third leading scorer Keonte Kennedy transferred to Memphis. Also, rotational player Jorell Saterfield transferred to Portland State. That leaves one starter, Jamari Sibley, who is back. Sibley averaged 5.3 points and 4 rebounds per game. He will be joined in the starter by a whole lot of transfers, including Calvin Solomon from Stephen F Austin, Tae Hardy from Southern Miss, and Otis Frazier from George Mason. They also expect freshman Jamal Sumlin to see some playing time.
