It’s a non-conference matchup to kick off on the hardwood as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference are on the road as they take on a member of the Mid-American Conference in the Buckeye State. The Evansville Purple Aces are on the road as they make the trip to face the Miami (OH) RedHawks Monday night. Evansville finished the 2021-22 campaign with a miserable 6-24 record, including 2-16 in conference play, continuing their issues in recent seasons. Miami (OH) ended the year 14-18, including an 8-12 mark in MAC action. In the all-time series between the programs, the Purple Aces own an 11-3 advantage, including a 101-87 win at home in the most recent matchup on December 7, 2019.

Evansville had another miserable campaign in 2021-22, finishing the season 6-24 overall and 2-16 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Purple Aces lost their final eight games, including getting walloped 81-59 in the first round of the MVC Tournament. That led to the firing of Todd Lickliter, who was 15-53 in two-plus seasons at the helm. In his stead, the school hired David Ragland, who was an assistant at Butler last season, to take over the reins as head coach. Ragland doesn’t inherit much in the way of returning talent as only two of the top seven scorers from a team that was one of the worst in the nation are back for this season.

The Purple Aces put up an average of 59.2 points per game last season, putting them 354th in the nation in scoring offense. Evansville grabbed 27.2 rebounds a night (357th) and dished out 10.5 assists per contest. The Purple Aces were sli ghtly below average defensively, as they finished last season allowing 70.7 points per contest, putting them 224th in scoring defense. Blaise Beauchamp is the leading returning scorer from last season as he put up eight points a game. Antoine Smith Jr., Preston Phillips and Gage Bob are the only other players back from last season. Marvin Coleman II (transfer from UNLV), Sekou Kalle (transfer from Akron), Kenny Strawbridge Jr. (transfer from Alabama State), Yacine Toumi (transfer from Little Rock), plus freshmen Chris Moncrief, Matus Milovec, Logan McIntire, Gabe Spinelli and Cameron Gehlhausen are needed to contribute on both ends for the team to succeed. Evansville shot only 39.8% from the floor as a team on the year, leaving them 345th in Division I. The Purple Aces splashed 8.2 three-pointers a night while shooting 33% from beyond the arc. Evansville cashed in a mediocre 70.8% of their chances at the free throw line this season.
