Auburn vs. Mississippi St Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 11-5-2022

A pair of teams from the SEC West tangle on the gridiron in search of a triumph in the Magnolia State. The Auburn Tigers are on the road as they make the trip to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs Saturday night. Auburn came up a 41-27 loser at home against Arkansas last Saturday in their previous contest, failing to cover the line as a four-point underdog. That led to the firing of coach Bryan Harsin after less than two years at the helm. Mississippi State had a bye week last week: they were drubbed 30-6 on the road by Alabama on October 22 as they failed to cover the 21.5-point line in the contest. In the all-time series between the teams, the Tigers own a 61-30-3 advantage though it was the Bulldogs picking up a 43-34 road win in the most recent matchup on November 13, 2021.

Auburn suffered their fourth straight loss as they were knocked off at home by Arkansas last week. That proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for coach Bryan Harsin, who was fired earlier this week: former Tigers’ running back Cadillac Williams is the interim coach. The Tigers dropped to 3-5 overall and are just 1-4 in conference play on the year. Against Arkansas, Auburn led 3-0 but that was their lone lead of the contest. They hung tough for a half, trailing 17-13 at intermission, but gave up 21 unanswered points to start the second half, leaving them in a 38-13 hole midway through the fourth quarter, sealing their fate. Auburn was outgained 520-468 in total offense and gave up 23 first downs while allowing 20. That more than negated the fact that the Tigers forced the game’s lone turnover and held a razor thin 30:10 to 29:50 edge in time of possession.

The Tigers enter this game 93rd in the FBS in passing offense with an average of 217.3 yards per game on the season. Auburn was 50th in the country with an average of 171.8 yards a night when it comes to moving the ball on the ground. The Tigers are 103rd in the nation in scoring offense with an average of 22.9 points a game. Auburn is below average defensively as they stand 95th in scoring defense by allowing 29.9 points a contest. Robby Ashford is 91 of 173 passing for 1,299 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. He is second on the team in rushing with 397 yards and three scores. T.J. Finley (33 of 53, 431 yards, TD, four INT, 33 rush yards, TD) and Holden Geriner (two of three, eight yards) have seen action as well. Tank Bigsby leads the team on the ground with 110 carries for 587 yards and seven scores this season. Jarquez Hunter (55 carries, 257 yards, five TD) and Damari Alston (12 carries, 79 yards) have been in the mix as well. Ja’Varrius Johnson leads the team with 22 receptions for 399 yards and a score. Koy Moore (14 grabs, 243 yards), John Samuel Shenker (20 catches, 208 yards, TD), Hunter (13 receptions, 197 yards, two TD) and Shedrick Jackson (12 grabs, 170 yards) are each over the 150-yard mark in receiving yards on the year. Anders Carlson has hit all 21 extra point attempts and 10 of 14 field goal attempts with a long of 46 this season.
