The Minnesota Timberwolves have been trying to establish themselves as a real player in the Western Conference this season. Tonight they will get to put that to the test against the Phoenix Suns. The hosts are 5-1 to start the season and are looking like a serious threat to return to the NBA Finals once more. It is just the test this Timberwolves need.

While Chris Paul is having a tough time scoring the ball to begin the season, tonight's opponents could represent the perfect opportunity for him to bounce back. Last season the point guard averaged 21 points per game against the Timberwolves. And while the visitors tonight do boast a new center on their roster, he is unlikely to impact Paul too much. After all, when taking on Rudy Gobert and the Utah Jazz last season, the point guard managed to score 21.3 points per game.
D'Angelo Russell is likely going to get the assignment of matching up against Paul. The Timberwolves point guard is hardly a lock down defender and should be exploitable in pick and roll situations. Paul should have a choice between trying to attack Karl-Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert in that scenario. Towns has the worst defensive rating of any Timberwolves player seeing over 15 minutes of playing time a night. Gobert on the other hand is likely to drop off from Paul, allowing him to attack from the mid-range. That is an area the veteran thrives in. Look for him to put together his best scoring night of the season.
