Two long-time and storied rivals of the NBA's Atlantic Division will square off on Tuesday night to kick off the opening night of the NBA season. The Philadelphia 76ers, fresh off another disappointing early-exit in the playoffs last year will bring their new-look roster to Boston to take on the defending Eastern Conference Champion Celtics. Boston will be trying to get back to the NBA Finals this season but with a new coach, Joe Mazzulla, who will serve as interim-head coach while Ime Udoka serves a year's suspension for unspecified inappropriate conduct. The opening tap is scheduled for 7:30pm EST.

The Sixers were under the spotlight for much of last season. First, they dealt with the ongoing saga of AWOL all-star Ben Simmons and his refusal to play for coach Doc Rivers and the Sixers. Then they dealt with the will they, won't they trade deadline speculation until the team did eventually trade Simmons for former MVP James Harden. Finally, the team built to win in the playoffs faltered as MVP runner-up Joel Embiid got hurt and was not quite himself as the Miami Heat defeated the Sixers in six games. This offseason, Philadelphia made several key moves to strengthen the team's overall depth and watched as James Harden came into camp in the best shape he's been in several seasons. While Harden's condition may be the best news, the addition of PJ Tucker will be a close second. He gives the Sixers toughness and defensive intensity that the team lacked last season. The Sixers also have another year of improvement expected fro m budding NBA all-star Tyrese Maxey. Maxey is a floor spreader and someone Philadelphia hopes can consistently beat his man off the dribble this season. Of course, the team's success or failure will likely be determined by the health of Embiid. On the floor, he's the best true big man in the league but the Sixers will need to manage his minutes to keep him healthy for the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see if the Philadelphia defense returns to the form it showed prior to Harden's arrival. They were among the top-five defensive teams all season but dipped to seventh with the addition of Harden. He has come in physically ready to play this season so that has to have Rivers happy about his star point guard. Philadelphia finished fifth in the league in 3pt shooting percentage last season and that number should improve with the additions of Tucker and Daniel House Jr., an excellent long range shooter. Newcomer Montrzel Harrell will give the Sixers second unit some rebounding and scoring close to the basket. The Sixers split their season series with Boston last season, 2-2.
