The New York Yankees looked like they had proved that power-ball was stronger than small-ball as they led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 9th over the Cleveland Guardians in game three. Five singles later and the Guardians had pulled off an improbable 6-5 win to push the Yankees to the brink of elimination. On Sunday, with their season on the line, the Yankees will turn to Gerrit Cole (13-8, 3.50) as he faces the Guardians Cal Quantrill (15-5, 3.38) in a rematch from game one in which Cole and the Yankees won 4-1. Game time is set for 7:37pm EST.

The New York Yankees continue to score runs in one way and one way only in this series. with the long ball. The Yankees hit three home runs and had just five hits on Saturday and had a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the 9th inning. Aaron Judge ended an 0-9 slump with a 2-run 449 foot home run blast in the second, Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run home run in the fifth and Harrison Bader added a solo blast in the 7th to give New York a two-run cushion. That would be all the offense New York would muster on the night. The Yankees would go on to use five pitcher in total but were without the services of closer Clay Holmes, unable to pitch on back-to-back days with shoulder issues. As the Guardians mounted their comeback in the 9th, the Yankees had to turn to spot starter and long-reliever Clarke Schmidt to close it out and he couldn't get the job done.

The Yankees look like a shell of the team that battered much of the American League in the first four months of the season. They are without DJ LeMahieu this series and Matt Carpenter has been reduced to one pinch hitting appearance thus far. On Saturday, the Yankees had to try and finish out a huge game with Wandy Peralta and Schmidt in the 9th inning. On Sunday, they will turn to their ace, Gerrit Cole to get them back to the Bronx with a chance to win the series. In game one, Cole went 6.1 innings, allowed six hits and just one run and struck out eight batters. He did throw 101 pitches in just 6.1 innings and may need to be more economical on Sunday to save a tired bullpen in a third straight game.
