The Tampa Bay Lightning face the Pittsburgh Penguins with both teams expected to be near the top of the Eastern Conference this season. The Lightning have been the class of the NHL, appearing in the Stanley Cup Final in each of the last three seasons. The Penguins meanwhile finished last season with the third-best record in the Metropolitan Division and started the season with a statement win on their home ice. Both teams are looking to start the year strong and make noise early in the year in the Eastern Conference and the upcoming game should be a great one as a result.
The Lightning had a rough opening night but made a statement in their recent game scoring five goals in a dominating victory. Steven Stamkos scored two goals while Alex Killorn and Corey Perry added a goal and three assists to the top two lines but the rest of the offense also looked great in the recent game. Ross Colton and Vladislav Namestnikov combined for a goal and three assists to add depth to the forward unit while defensemen Victor Hedman, Mikhail Sergachev, and Cal Foote added a goal and three assists from the point to put the offense over the top.
While the offense stepped up in the recent game, the defense has played well throughout the first two games of the year, allowing only five goals. Victor Hedman and Mikhail Sergachev have led the top two pairings but the rest of the defense has also stepped up with Cal Foote, Erik Cernak, and the rest of the defense controlling the center of the defensive zone to force poor shots on the net. Moreover, goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy has been great to start the year, saving 62 of the 67 shots he's faced.
