Chicago Blackhawks (0-2-0) vs. San Jose Sharks (0-2-0)

The Chicago Blackhawks head to SPA Center at San Jose on Saturday night to take on the San Jose Sharks. These two Western Conference foes meet for the first time in 2022-23, and the Sharks shoot for their third straight home victory over the Blackhawks. Last season, San Jose went 2-1 against Chicago, outlasting the Blackhawks 4-1 in their lone encounter in California.

San Jose opens as a -152 home favorite. Chicago sits at +137 moneyline odds, and the totals are listed at 6.0 goals.

The Chicago Blackhawks started the 2022-23 season with a tough back-to-back set on the road. After losing 5-2 at the reigning NHL champs, the Colorado Avalanche, in their season opener, the Blackhawks suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Vegas Golden Knights this past Thursday.

Chicago didn’t stand a chance against the Avs in Colorado. The Blackhawks took a paltry 17 shots while surrendering 35 in a return. They went 2-for-3 with the man advantage but yielded four goals on six power-play opportunities. The Blackhawks played much better in Las Vegas, and Alex Stalock posted 36 saves in his debut, but it wasn’t enough.

“The compete level was really high tonight from everybody, the goaltender out, and we’re pretty happy with a lot of things we saw on the ice. Unfortunate we just couldn’t get it crossed that line,” Chicago coach Luke Richardson said after a narrow loss at Vegas. “Thought their goalie played well really early, and at the end, there was a couple of chances that we had. I think in the middle part of the game we didn’t get a lot to the net, but we still competed and played much better so it was a step forward for us.”

Petr Mrazek guarded the cage against Colorado, surrendering five goals on 35 shots. The 30-year-old goalie went 12-6-0 in 18 starts for the Toronto Maple Leafs last regular season. After missing the entire 2020-21 due to an injury, Alex Stalock played just one game in 2021-22 because of a heart condition caused by COVID-19.
