The Patriots continued their mastery of quarterback Jared Goff, this time in a Lions' uniform, as they steamrolled the Lions 29-0 last Sunday. The Patriots took the win in rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe's first-ever start in the NFL by providing the rookie with a relentless ground game and a suffocating defense.

“He was confident out there,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference. “He does a good job of seeing the game, can come off and articulate what he saw. And he’s usually right.”

The Patriots' offense was led by a ground attack that chewed up 176 yards rushing led by Rhamondre Stevens' career-high 161 yards rushing. Starting running back Damien Harris left the game early with a hamstring injury and just 11 yards. Zappe finished his first start with 17 completions in 21 throws for 188 yards and a touchdown. Zappe also th rew a pick in the win. Wide receiver Jakobi Myers returned from a one-week absence with a knee injury and came through with 7 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots finished with 364 total yards of offense but were a disappointing 0-for-4 in the red zone.

On the defensive side of the ball, New England was dominant in shutting out the league's highest scoring offense. They held the Lions to just 211 yards passing and had two Matt Judon sacks and three tackles for loss. Rookie cornerback Jack Jones had his second interception in as many weeks and Kyle Dugger returned a Goff fumble, forced by Judon, for a touchdown.

The Patriots will likely take the field with rookie Zappe at the helm on Sunday. Mac Jones has practiced on a limited basis and has a chance to start but if he's limited at all with the ankle, Zappe seems like the obvious play. New England comes into this matchup with the 19th ranked offense in the NFL. They are 9th in the NFL in rushing and 21st in the league in passing. The Patriots have been dismal in red zone offensive efficiency, ranked just 28th in the NFL. They are also struggling with turnovers, ranking 23rd in the NFL. On the defensive side of the ball, New England continues to get it done despite a number of moving parts from last season. The Patriots are ranked 12th in scoring defense in the NFL. They are 22nd against the run and 11th against the pass this season. The Patriots' red zone defense is near the middle of the pack, ranking 13th in the NFL.

Key Injuries: QB Mac Jones (ankle) is likely out but, not surprisingly, th e Patriots have kept his status close to the vest. RB Damien Harris (hamstring) was listed as limited but don't expect him to play. Linebacker Josh Uche, who is a strong special team player and spot pass rusher, was also limited this week with a hamstring.
