NFL Survivor Pool Week 6 strategy: Passing on Packers, and breaking down every worthy option
NFL Survivor Pool Week 6 strategy: Passing on Packers, and breaking down every worthy option

If you're like me, you used the Jacksonville Jaguars in your big survivor pool last week and have to spend the rest of the year thinking about what might have been. They were the most popular option in the Circa Survivor contest last week, so I'm not the only one licking my wounds after getting knocked out. If you're not like me and you didn't have to worry about surviving all year, you probably used one of our other three options and are still alive after the Buccaneers, Vikings and Bills all put together wins.

My plan in us ing the Jaguars was that I was going to use one of those other three teams this week with my options limited, and the other two later in the season during weeks where options should be very limited. Since survivor pools are winner-take-all and I had to get to the end of the year to split the prize in a 13,000-plus entry field, it didn't matter to me whether I lost in Week 5 or Week 15, and I wasn't going to want to use the Jaguars in any other spot this season.

If you've survived and advanced, I'll continue presenting several options you should consider each week and lay out the other spots where you might end up wanting to use each team later in the season, along with your other options on those weeks. That format should allow you to tailor the advice specifically to the size of your survivor pool remaining as well as the teams you've already burned. One touchdown favorite that certainly doesn't top my list is the Green Bay Packers, who have looked stuck in the mud offensively for much of the year. I used the Packers in my pool in Week 4 against the Patriots and barely survived, and after Green Bay couldn't beat the Giants last week as big favorites, it's hard to know when to trust them moving forward.

Why listen to me? Well, I'm 445-378-24 on against-the-spreads picks over the last five years and even better with my top five picks each week, going 329-250-21 (56.8%) over the last seven years in the Westgate SuperContest. While this doesn't involve picking against the spread, I do believe by applying the strategies I've developed to have long-term success on those picks to survivor pools, we'll be in the best position to outlast the competition.
