San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 10-9-2022

San Diego and New York will play the lone winner-take-all Game 3 of the Wild Card round when they square off on Sunday night. The Padres opened the series with a 7-1 win on Friday night, but the Mets saved their season with a 7-3 win in Game 2 on Saturday night. The other three Wild Card series were decided in two games each.

San Diego knew it was going to have trouble scoring as many runs as it did against Max Scherzer on Friday night, and that certainly turned out to be the case on Saturday against Jacob deGrom. He allowed two runs across six strong innings, striking out eight batters. San Diego was able to finish the game with six hits, but it was not enough to compete with New York’s seven runs. The Padres still have a chance to win the series, though, as they notched a 7-1 win in Game 1 on Friday. Right fielder Juan Soto led the team with two hits and a walk on Saturday, while center fielder Trent Grisham homered.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Musgrove is going to be on the mound for San Diego on Sunday night. He threw six scoreless innings against San Francisco last Monday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. Musgrove allowed just one earned run across 22 innings in his final four starts of the regular season, posting a 27:8 K:BB over that stretch. He finished with a career-best 2.93 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181 innings this year. Musgrove has struggled against the Mets during his career, going 1-5 with a 5.83 ERA in six appearances. He is 1-0 with an 8.10 ERA in seven postseason outings, which all came during a World Series run with Houston in 2017.
