Toledo vs. San Diego State Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-24-2022

The San Diego State Aztecs look to get back on track Saturday when they host the Toledo Rockets. The Aztecs, of the Mountain West Conference, are off to a 1-2 start, while Toledo, of the Mid American Conference, is 2-1 on the season. The Rockets are ranked No. 88 in the college football power rankings while San Diego State is ranked No. 91. This is the first time these two programs have met. Toledo is a 3 point road favorite. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif.

The Toledo Rockets have been impressive so far on this young season. They have jumped out to a 2-1 record and are ranked No. 88 in the national power rankings. Of course, they have not played the toughest opponents, at least in their first two games. They shut out Long Island 37-0 in the opener and then beat a bad UMass team 55-10 in the second game, covering as a 28 point favorite. But then last Saturday they got a dose of reality, losing 77-21 at Ohio State. Now, the Buckeyes are the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, and they were 31 point favorites over Toledo, so a big loss was expected. Where it leaves Toledo is not completely known at this point.

The Rockets beat up on a couple of cupcakes and then got pummeled by a national powerhouse. This week will truly be their first real test of the season, as they face a good San Diego State team on the road. So far this season, the Rockets average 37.7 points per game, which ranks 39th in the country. That total is padded by some lopsided wins over lesser teams. Their defense gives up 29 points per game, which ranks 88th, but that too is skewed, both ways, by some lopsided games. Against Ohio State, they could not stop the Buckeyes on any level as OSU ran for 281 yards and passed for 482 yards. Offensively, the Rockets mustered 83 yards passing and 124 yards rushing against a powerhouse defense. Quarterback Dequan Finn threw for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for 70 yards and 1 touchdown.
