Facing Luis Gil hasn't been a fun time for anyone recently, as he's posting a 1.99 ERA, good for sixth in MLB.
His flamethrowing ways have also led to plenty of punchouts. Gil ranks 11th leaguewide with 79 strikeouts thus far, and he's posted the fifth-best K/9 at 11.2.
However, all of that has led to a strikeout total for his outings from our best spo rtsbooks that keeps climbing and a bar that's eventually tough to soar above.
That's the case on Tuesday, with Gil's strikeout total sitting at 7.5 across the board. The number is no doubt a product of his recent strikeout surge, with a triple-take inducing 14 strikeouts on May 18 against the Chicago White Sox the highlight over his last three outings. That run has also included appearances with eight and nine strikeouts.
But the White Sox are a hapless hitting group, and one of those matchups was against the Seattle Mariners, who strike out as though its their sole purpose, leading MLB in that category. Meanwhile, the Twins sit a more mid-pack 18th.
Two projection models are forecasting a strikeout total around 6.5 for Gil on Tuesday, including NumberFire at a low of 6.2. That gives us plenty of cushion with this high 7.5 total.

There's a choreography of sorts to the Juan Soto existence. Shuffle, slam, repeat.
It's simple, yet highly effective, and has resulted in him immediately and predictably becoming a lynchpin in a daunting offense. He's fresh off being named the AL Player of the Week, and the outfielder leads our MLB MVP odds in the AL.
Soto has been sizzling overall while sitting second in MLB with a 1.031 OPS and tied for fourth with 17 home runs. But he's been white-hot lately and on a seven-game hitting streak, a stretch that's featured six extra-base hits, including three dingers and two triples.
Now he gets to stare down Bailey Ober. The Twins starter has been pedestrian with his 4.89 ERA, but a heavy reliance on his four-seam fastball is especially concerning for him against Soto. Bailey throws that nearly 39.1% of the time, and it's a pitch Soto is clobbering routinely in 2024 w hile recording an .850 slugging percentage and 64.6% hard-hit percentage, all according to Baseball Savant.
Given that matchup, the plus odds on Soto to record Over 1.5 total bases are highly appealing. He's listed at -105 at FanDuel, but these +110 odds at DraftKings could lead to a $21 payout on a $10 wager, with implied odds of 47.6%
