Against Carolina, New Jersey struggled in the opening 40 minutes and saw their third-period rally fall short in the contest. The Devils held a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period of play but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes. In the second period, New Jersey was outshot 10-5 and outscored 2-0 to trail 3-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Devils hold a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and they outscored Carolina 2-0 to end up a goal short as time expired. Justin Dowling got New Jersey on the board with his first goal of the season at 5:25 off assists from Alexander Holtz and Chris Tierney. Jesper Bratt got the Devils within a goal with his 18th goal of the year at 19:57 off an assist from Luke Hughes. That was as close as the Devils would get as time ran out. Nico Daws took the loss as he stopped nine of 12 shots before getting pulled. Vitek Vanacek stopped all 11 shots he faced in relief for the Dev ils, who held a 25-23 shot edge, in the loss. Vanacek is slated to be between the pipes for this contest.
