It’s a battle of Eastern Conference foes hoping to gain ground in the playoff picture as they do battle in the Steel City looking to earn two points. The Montreal Canadiens are on the road as they make the trip to face the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night. Montreal was at home against the Islanders Thursday night in their previous contest, earning a 4-3 victory. Pittsburgh hosted Florida at home in the front half of a back-to-back set that closes here Friday night. They were dropped 5-2 on the road by Arizona Monday night in their previous contest. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Canadiens own a 6-3-1 advantage but it was the Penguins winning 4-3 in a shootout on the road in the first meeting this season on December 13, 2023. Montreal was in action at home Thursday night against the Islanders. The Canadiens entered Friday night 20-21-7 on the season as they look to gain ground in the Atlantic Division. They stand sixth in the standings, 22 points behind Boston for the top spot and 10 points behind the Lightning for the final guaranteed playoff spot. They were eight points back of the Red Wings for the second wild card spot. Montreal stands 28th in the league in offensive production with 2.71 goals per game on the season. The Canadiens are tied for 27th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.50 goals per contest. Montreal is 20th in the league in power play success by cashing in 19.4% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Canadiens are tied for 28th in penalty killing by successfully getting through 73.2% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against New York, Montreal started strong but then needed to hang on to earn the win over the Islanders Thursday night. The Canadiens held a 13-12 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off with a 3-0 advantage on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of action. Nick Suzuki opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season, on the power play, at 7:06 off assists from Juraj Slafkovsky and Sean Monahan. Cole Caufield made it a 2-0 game with his 17th goal of the year at 11:36 off an assist from Suzuki. Only 43 seconds later, Monahan extended to a 3-0 advantage with his 12th goal of the year, on the power play, at 12:19 off assists from Mike Matheson and Sam Montembeault. The second period saw the Canadiens outshot by an 18-7 margin and they gave up the lone goal to trim their edge to 3-1 at the second intermission. In the third period, Montreal was outshot 16-6 and outscored 2-1, giving them just enough of an edge to earn the win. After giving up a pair of goals to tie the score, Monahan scored his second of the night and 13th of the season at 17:48 off assists from Josh Anderson and Caufield to secure the victory. Montembeault stopped 43 shots for the Canadiens, who were outshot 46-26, in the win.
