Kansas vs. Houston Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-17-2022

Kansas will try to build on its incredible start to the season when it travels to Houston for a meeting on Saturday afternoon. The Jayhawks, who lead the country in points per game through two weeks, pulled off a 56-42 upset in overtime at West Virginia last week. Houston opened its season with a triple-overtime win at UTSA, but it lost to Texas Tech in double overtime in Week 2.

It is early in the season, but Kansas has already started building a successful campaign by its standards. The Jayhawks only won two games during the entire 2021 season, so they have already matched that win total two games into their 2022 edition. They dominated Tennessee Tech in their season opener, picking up a 56-10 win as 30.5-point favorites. Their Week 2 performance was even more impressive, as they erased a 21-7 deficit before eventually recording a 55-42 win over West Virginia in overtime as 14-point underdogs. They sealed the victory when sophomore cornerback Cobee Bryant returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown, becoming the first team to win by 13 points in overtime since Central Michigan in 1998.

Bryant was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, marking the second-straight honor for Kansas, as Lonnie Phelps earned that distinction in Week 1. Quarterback Jalon Daniels completed 18 of 29 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner to redshirt freshman Quentin Skinner in overtime. It was the second three-touchdown game of Daniels’ career, and he also rushed for 85 yards on 12 carries. He was named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 watch list for week two of the season following that performance. Daniels leads an offense that leads the country in points per game (55.5) and ranks first in third down conversion percentage (73.9%). Kansas has allowed zero sacks and has rushed for 10 touchdowns through two games.
